Kevin Roth, metal sculpture, Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands Washington. Please share a brief biography, including where you’re from and how you got started as an artist.
always liked to make things, draw & paint & color since the beginning, the sense of accomplishment and interest from others became addictive.

Why do you do what you do?
it lets me be my own boss, it's a release, puts me in a good mood.

What jobs have you done, other than being an artist?
mechanic, wood cutting, carpentry, oyster farm maintenance, welding, fabricating, sawmilling, almost anything with my hands.

Kevin Roth, metal sculptures, san juan islands washington. What role, if any, does an artist play in society?
since the world would be a very dull place without art, the artist helps the world to shine.

What do you like/dislike about the art world?
corporate art, cookie cutter art, sell out unhappy artists, those who brag about art schooling they have had, folks that try to teach you how to properly appreciate art. beauty is in the eye of the beholder, remember.

Kevin Roth, metal sculptures, san juan islands washington. What is “creativity”?
to make something beautiful from almost nothing or from something most have no interest in (fooling them).

What motivates you to begin a new project, and what keeps you going?
sometimes dreams at 3 am, sometimes tripping over something and saying, "hey, i could make a ______ from that." sort of like looking at clouds and seeing things. once started on something, the blood really starts flowing and i sometimes get downright obsessive.

How do you describe your style?
unconventional.

don't follow many artists, there are so many out there.

If there was no chance of ever being paid, would you still do your work?
absolutely.

Describe yourself in 3 words.
unconventional overactive brain

a little more gray and wrinkled with 10 more cool pieces in my yard. seeing the world through the same eyes.
